Aerial Duct Ribbon Optical Fiber Cable
The One Reel That Handles Both Halves of the Route
Most fiber routes are not purely aerial or purely ducted - they are mixed. The cable leaves the exchange in a duct, climbs a pole, runs overhead for a few kilometers, dips back into a conduit to cross a road, then goes aerial again. Traditionally, that forces a contractor to buy two different cable types and splice them together at every transition. The Aerial Duct Ribbon Optical Fiber Cable removes that headache: it is engineered to perform in both environments, so one reel, one SKU, and one cable type carry the entire route - with the density and splicing speed of ribbon technology on top.
Built for Both Worlds
For the duct sections. The low-friction PE outer sheath pulls cleanly through PVC and HDPE conduits, around bends, and past existing cables without snagging. The compact ribbon core keeps the cable slim and light - typically 40% lighter than a stranded design of the same core count - which means less pulling tension and easier handling through congested duct banks.
For the aerial sections. UV-stabilized black PE resists years of direct sun exposure without embrittlement or cracking. The reinforced strength members give the cable enough tensile capacity for pole-mounted spans, while the tight, low-sag construction handles wind loading, ice accumulation, and thermal cycling from -40°C to +70°C. In most installations it is lashed to a messenger wire or supported with standard aerial hardware.
Ribbon core, either way. Fibers are bonded into flat 12-fiber ribbons, stacking up to high core counts in a small cross-section. When the route requires splicing, a mass fusion splicer welds a whole ribbon in one pass - the same speed advantage that makes ribbon cable the favorite for high-count networks.
Where This Cable Earns Its Keep
Mixed urban-suburban routes - ducted downtown sections transitioning to aerial poles in residential areas.
FTTH feeder and distribution lines that hop between underground segments and overhead spans as terrain dictates.
Rural long-haul links where poles carry most of the route but road crossings and river underpasses need short ducted sections.
Campus and enterprise backbones combining underground tunnels with overhead pathways between buildings.
Temporary or emergency links where crews need one cable type that works no matter how the route is laid out on the day.
Advantages at a Glance
One cable, one inventory - no separate aerial and duct products, no transition splices, fewer failure points and less wasted stock.
Fast, dense splicing - ribbon structure means mass fusion splicing, saving hours on every high-count joint.
Lighter on the poles - the compact ribbon core reduces weight and wind load compared to stranded cables of equal core count.
Weatherproof and UV-stable - built for decades of exposed service with minimal maintenance.
Simplified logistics - fewer SKUs to quote, stock, and ship across your projects.

FAQ
Q1: Can the same cable really be used for both aerial and duct installation?
A: Yes - that is the point of the design. The sheath and strength members are specified to satisfy both the pulling and crush requirements of duct work and the tensile and UV requirements of aerial spans, so a single product covers mixed routes without transition joints.
Q2: Does it need a messenger wire for aerial installation?
A: Typically yes. It is designed to be lashed to a steel messenger or supported by standard aerial hardware. If you need a truly self-supporting solution with no messenger, ask about our ADSS cable instead.
Q3: How many cores are available?
A: Standard ribbon configurations run from 24 up to 288 cores, with 12-fiber ribbon pitch as the default. Higher counts are available on request for backbone applications.
Q4: How does it handle temperature extremes?
A: The cable is rated for -40°C to +70°C operating range. Ribbon structure keeps fiber strain low during contraction and expansion, and the UV-stabilized sheath is formulated to stay flexible in cold weather and crack-resistant in heat.
Q5: What reel lengths can we order?
A: Stock reels are available in 2 km, 3 km, and 4 km, and we can cut to your exact route length to minimize waste - especially useful when you are buying one cable type for a long mixed route. Contact us with your route layout for a recommendation and quotation.
