Flame-retardant Communication Optical Cable
The Cable That Refuses to Feed the Fire
In a building fire, cabling is often the silent accelerant. Conventional PVC-sheathed cables ignite readily, drip burning material, and release dense black smoke laced with hydrogen chloride - the same gas that formed mustard gas in World War I. A flame-retardant communication optical cable changes that story: it resists ignition, limits flame spread, and - in its halogen-free formulation - produces minimal smoke with no toxic acid gases.
The difference is not an additive. It is a different material philosophy. The sheath and jacket compounds are engineered so that when exposed to flame, they form a char layer that insulates the core and starves the fire of fuel, rather than melting into flaming droplets.
How the Fire Performance Works
LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) Sheath: The outer jacket uses polyolefin-based compounds instead of PVC. When burned, LSZH emits smoke up to 80% less dense than PVC and zero halogen gases, keeping evacuation routes visible and breathable.
Char-Forming Mechanism: On ignition, the compound cross-links into a carbonaceous char that acts as a thermal barrier. This self-extinguishing behavior limits the burned length along the cable run.
Flame-Spread Containment: Tested to IEC 60332-3-24 (vertical tray, Category A), a flame-retardant cable limits vertical flame propagation to under 1.5 m from the ignition point - giving fire crews a window to act before the cable tray becomes a chimney.
Drip-Free Combustion: Anti-drip additives prevent burning polymer from falling onto floors or equipment below, which stops secondary fires from starting where the fire brigade least expects them.
Where Fire Codes Demand This Cable
Subway and Rail Tunnels: Underground stations and tunnels concentrate people and cable trays in the same enclosed space. Flame-retardant, low-smoke cable is not optional here - it is written into transit authority specifications worldwide.
High-Rise Buildings: Vertical risers act as natural chimneys. Building codes in most jurisdictions require flame-retardant communication cable in riser and plenum spaces above certain floor heights.
Data Centers: A single server hall can hold kilometers of patch and backbone cable. Halogen-free construction protects both the people evacuating and the IT equipment, which corrodes rapidly when exposed to hydrogen chloride fumes.
Industrial Plants and Offshore Platforms: Refineries, chemical plants, and oil platforms carry extreme fire risk. Flame-retardant cable keeps control and monitoring links intact long enough for emergency shutdown sequences to complete.
Advantages at a Glance
Life-safety first: Smoke opacity and toxic gas emissions minimized to keep escape routes clear
Code compliance built in: Meets IEC 60332-1/3, IEC 61034 smoke density, and IEC 60754 halogen content tests
Self-extinguishing: Limits burned cable length, reducing replacement cost after a minor incident
Equipment protection: No hydrogen chloride means no acid corrosion of servers, switchgear, or structural steel
No compromise on optics: Flame-retardant construction still delivers ≤0.22 dB/km attenuation at 1550 nm, fully ITU-T G.652D compliant

The fibers, 250μm, are positioned in a loose tube made of a high modulus plastic. The tubes are filled with a water-resistant filling compound. A Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) locates in the center of core as a non-metallic strength member. The tubes (and fillers) are stranded around the strength member into a compact and circular core. After the cable core is filled with the filling compound to protect it from water ingress, the cable is completed with a PE sheath.

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between flame-retardant and fire-resistant cable?
Flame-retardant cable resists ignition and limits flame spread, but stops transmitting light when the fire destroys it. Fire-resistant (also called circuit-integrity) cable is additionally designed to keep the optical path working during a fire for a defined period, typically 90–180 minutes, for emergency systems.
Q2: Why is "zero halogen" important?
PVC jackets release hydrogen chloride gas when burned, which forms hydrochloric acid on contact with moisture - damaging lungs, eyes, and electronic equipment. LSZH compounds eliminate halogens entirely, so combustion products are mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide.
Q3: Which standard does the flame-retardant performance comply with?
The cable is tested to IEC 60332-1-2 for single-cable flame spread and IEC 60332-3-24 for vertical tray installations, with smoke density per IEC 61034-2 and halogen content per IEC 60754-1/2. Versions meeting UL 1666 riser requirements are available on request.
Q4: Does flame-retardant construction affect fiber performance?
No. The fire-performance layers sit outside the optical core. Attenuation, bandwidth, and operating temperature range (−40 °C to +70 °C) are identical to standard outdoor cables, verified by 100% factory OTDR testing.
Q5: Can this cable be used outdoors as well as indoors?
Yes. The LSZH sheath is UV-stabilized and water-resistant, so the cable suits indoor riser runs, outdoor duct routes, and tunnel installations. For direct burial, an armored variant with the same fire performance is recommended.
